I watched Food, Inc. last night.  (Michael Pollan and Eric Schlosser both contributed to the film.)  It was upsetting and fascinating and terrifying and wonderful.  If you’re at all concerned about what you put on your table or in your body, I urge you to watch. Here’s a quick list of recommended viewing on the [...]

The Fifth Third Burger

I’m particularly proud that this gastronomical giant is from my own Grand Rapids and the WMWhitecaps.  The Whitecaps baseball park, sponsored by Fifth Third Bank, sells a $20 burger made with five (5) one-third pound patties. Topped with Frito’s, chili, cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, sour cream – and served on what looks like an entire [...]

Over on BlogLess they ask, If we advertise a world that’s desirable enough, can we actually get consumers to go out and make it? While they are coming at it from a design angle I’m left thinking about the implications in the healthy food movement, aka slow food, aka artisanal and local, etc, in the [...]

2007 was the year of the cupcake. 2008 was the year of bacon. I predict that in 2009, it’s going to be all about the egg. Elph thinks it’s going to be rice. What’s your forecast?

Did some work at the Roadhouse this afternoon and Fabian treated me to a Po’ Boy sandwich.  I ordered it with fried oysters – you can choose that, shrimp, catfish, or all three – served on a Bakehouse hogie roll with mayo, cabbage, and Cornman pickled green tomato.  Delicious!

From the Overdue Posts pile…IT got together for another regular dinner on Nov. 21, the theme this time was Asian foods.  We started with edamame, crab rangoon (filo nightmare), and salad with marash pepper/teryaki/ginger (?) dressing.  The entree was shabu-shabu, literally meaning “swish-swish,” a fondue-like process of cooking thin sliced beef in a hot kettle [...]

Yesterday afternoon we all rode up to Cornman Farms in Dexter to have Mark show us around.  We spent a couple hours touring, harvesting, and tasting.  We had a lot of fun and Mark was an excellent host – and a terrific cook, too!  After our visit to the farm we all went to the [...]

My guilt has caught up with me and a long overdue follow-up post about our latest trip to New York is finally here.

It’s true.

Everything really does taste better with bacon. This is why IT huddles rock. EDIT (06/04/08): Curious folks have asked. Yup, it’s homemade. It’s a rum-brown sugar cream base with candied bacon bits. And yes, it’s delicious!
