Apple Stores – global local

By Elph · In: Good Stuff

22 Apr 2010

I was at our local Apple Store last night for a round table discussion on iPad use in business settings. A handful of local business folks and developers were there to chat. We had a wide ranging discussion, nothing deeply illuminating, but it was useful.

Afterwards I was chatting with the store manager and we were talking about the beautiful gray granite floor. I learned that all Apple stores on the planet use it and it is Italian (Pietra Serena) siltstone from the Sienna district and Apple owns the quarry. We then moved to the tables which, again, in all Apple stores on the planet, built by Fetzers,  a 93 year-old woodworking company based in Salt Lake City. The stainless steel walls from a company in Japan. The glass from another specific company in Montreal, I think. So who looks after the long term maintenance of things like the stainless steel walls and the siltstone floors? Dedicated teams that travel from store to store all over the planet. What this does to my brain is really shrink the distances of the world and simplifies the usual complexity in a way that reminds me of localized economic systems, and yet is global. It is like a village buying from the local baker and shoe maker. Except it is a global company operating on a planet wide level – but with the same intentionality in purchasing. Strange.

iStat

iStat Pro is a handy (and free) widget for Mac OS X that shows key stats about your machine at a glance: CPU & memory usage, network stats, temperature, fan RPM, and power usage.  It’s particularly handy to see your IP, both internal & external, as well as the temps of key hardware.  iStat for the iPhone is a similarly sweet app for monitoring plus netwok diagnostic tool.

ZAP Kick-Off

By Billie · In: ZAP|Zing Life

8 Apr 2010

The Zingerman’s Annual Planning cycle has begun! Of course, we kick things off with plenty of delicious food.

The businesses presented some inspiring goals that will help us achieve our collective vision for the year 2020.

Some things that we heard:

  • Bakehouse wants to be a Zero Waste business by 2012. Going for a completely smoke-free workplace. Year round composting.
  • Coffee Company wants to promote the seasonal nature of coffee. Active cupping room.
  • Roadhouse is working on establishing the bar’s identity. Known for service training.
  • Bakehouse offering sabbaticals for staffers who have been here forever.
  • Mail Order wants to have the coolest warehouse in the country.
  • ZingNet exploring entrepreneurial opportunities to develop skills and supplement income.
  • Two new potential businesses in the pipeline — Tunisian restaurant and an Asian noodle shop. (YUM!)

Lots more exciting ideas coming in the next few months!
