.co domains have gone on sale

After much talk the .co domains are now available. Though it remains to be seen how pervasive these will become in internet culture there is a lot of enthusiasm right now. Of course, you can get them from our reseller site, http://zingitdomains.com/, or all the other domain registrars.

I’ve taken the opportunity to register zingermans.co and elph.co. Just in case it’s useful. The prices seem to be standardized around the web at $29.99 per year.

GoogleFest – Flash Mob to Nominate Ann Arbor for Google Fiber

University of Michigan Diag, Ann Arbor
11:57am – 12pm

GoogleFest kicks off with a flash mob from 11:57am to 12pm on the Diag. A picture speaks a thousand words. We will have photographers / videographers at the Diag flash mob to capture HUNDREDS of A2 citizens cheering the A2 Fiber anthem for three minutes. We are going to catapult Ann Arbor’s Google Fiber fight to the national level.

Participating local-area businesses / restaurants / bars will provide GoogleFest discounts over the lunch hour for flash mob participants and the public. Each participating business / restaurant / bar will have a laptop for patrons to fan the A2 Fiber FB page, send a tweet, upload a YouTube video, submit a Google nomination form, etc.

Google is planning on launching an experimental, ultra high-speed (over 1 gigabit per second) network, and test it in location(s) across the country. “The level of community support” will be one of the key criteria used by the Google decision makers. You can do your part by nominating Ann Arbor at A2Fiber.com

Google is sponsoring free wifi at 47 airports across the US now until Jan 15th. Accompanying it is a photo contest as well as matching donations up to $250,000 from Google to participating non-profits.

New iMacs Out Today

The new iMacs feature LED-backlit 21.5 and 27-inch widescreen displays, with a new edge-to-edge glass and seamless aluminum case design. It’s quite the sexy little get up, and it’s sure to turn a few heads. Also sure to turn heads is the introduction of quad-core processors to the iMac line, though the entry level model still sports an Intel Core 2 Duo processor by default.

OSX Snow Leopard glitches

With every major OS release, you can expect some applications to break, and things to act up until a few patches are released–The latest version of OSX, Snow Leopard is no exception. ZingIT along with some help from a few brave ZCoBbers have been putting it to the test and we’ve found some lingering weirdness:

-Random logout. We’ve seen it only once, but others on the webs have also reported getting randomly logged off while in the middle of working in MS Office applications.

-Can’t print to Sharp copiers. The drivers from Sharp for the previous version of OSX are incompatible with Snow Leopard. The word from the Sharp reps is they’ll have an update out in October. In the mean time, the generic postscipt driver works for black and white, and now does duplexing.

Otherwise, we’ve seen a few other things that were quickly patched. More to come I’m sure.

Texting + Driving = Dangerous

NYTimes has an article today on the increased risk of accidents while texting and driving. I’ve always thought texting and driving simultaneously was pretty dumb, now I have supporting stats: “…When the drivers texted, their collision risk was 23 times greater than when not texting.” Additionally terrifying, “In the moments before a crash or near crash, drivers typically spent nearly five seconds looking at their devices — enough time at typical highway speeds to cover more than the length of a football field.” Peep the full article for details on the studies conducted.
