Whoa? How do we know that’s safe?

As I envision choosing more internet based applications I get asked, in so many words, What are the criteria for examining the stability/risk of web based software solutions? Here are a few questions we can ask. Can you think of others?

  • what’s the financial picture – on VC funding, puttering along on donations?
  • how long have they been around?
  • how many developers do they have?
  • how many clients/users do they have?
  • how frequently do they update the software?
  • what’s their knowledge-base look like? Robust?
  • how much of their feature set is core? How much third party?
  • do they have tiers for scalability? both feature and cost?
  • do they have an API?
  • do they take into account security in their design?
  • what’s their guaranteed uptime?
  • who owns the content?
  • XML (or other) data dump capability?
