Whoa? How do we know that’s safe?

14 May 2009As I envision choosing more internet based applications I get asked, in so many words, What are the criteria for examining the stability/risk of web based software solutions? Here are a few questions we can ask. Can you think of others?
- what’s the financial picture – on VC funding, puttering along on donations?
- how long have they been around?
- how many developers do they have?
- how many clients/users do they have?
- how frequently do they update the software?
- what’s their knowledge-base look like? Robust?
- how much of their feature set is core? How much third party?
- do they have tiers for scalability? both feature and cost?
- do they have an API?
- do they take into account security in their design?
- what’s their guaranteed uptime?
- who owns the content?
- XML (or other) data dump capability?
